Students are expected to be present and punctual for all classes. An absence occurs when a student misses more than ten minutes of a given class period. An excused absence is one that was necessitated by sickness or a higher obligation to family. The reason for an absence must be specified by a note from parents or a medical practitioner in order for the absence to be considered excused. This note must be brought to the office when the student returns to school. An un-excused absence is one that does not meet the requirements of an excused absence. Un-excused absences result in an "F" or "O" for work assigned or done during the period or periods of un-excused absence. Any student leaving the office will be considered un-excused. Oversleeping results in an un-excused absence or tardy.

All absences after the tenth absence in a given semester will be considered un-excused unless accompanied by a doctor's note. This note must be brought to the office when the student returns to school or the absence will be un-excused and remain un-excused.

After being absent, a student is required to obtain an admit slip from the office before he or she will be allowed into class. Any student who comes to class without an admit will be sent to the office for an admit and will be given a tardy detention if he/she returns to class after the tardy bell. Students who participate in school-sponsored activities will be counted present.

A student will be allowed a reasonable length of time to turn in make-up work after an absence.

The following procedure will be employed for un-excused absences: each school day or portion of a school day that a student is truant will be counted as one un-excused absence. On the first truancy the student will be suspended in-school for one day and a meeting between the parents and the principal will be requested. On the second truancy the same consequences apply. In the event of a third truancy the student will be suspended out-of-school until the next school board meeting. The parents and/or student must appear before the board to apply for

readmission to school. See SUSPENSION POLICY for details on in-school and out-of-school suspension.

A tardy results when a student arrives in the classroom after the tardy bell. The consequences for a tardy is a thirty minute detention. This detention will be served on the day of the tardy unless alternate arrangements have been made with the superintendent. Friday tardies will be served the following Monday or first school day after a holiday. Detention takes precedence over athletic practice.

Detentions that are not served are doubled and will be served the following day. Double detentions that are not served will result in 4 hours of in-school suspension to be served as soon as possible. Suspension time that isn't served will be treated as a very serious offense.
